Simple Guide to な-Adjectives

What are Na-Adjectives?

な-adjectives are a type of adjective in Japanese that require the particle (na) when they modify nouns. They describe qualities or states of being and can express things like feelings, appearances, or conditions.

  • きれい (kirei) – “beautiful” → きれいな花 (kirei na hana) – “a beautiful flower”

 

  • 元気 (genki) – “healthy” → 元気な子供 (genki na kodomo) – “a healthy child”

 

  • 静か (shizuka) – “quiet” → 静かな場所 (shizuka na basho) – “a quiet place”

 

Examples

  • He likes sushi.
    彼は寿司が好きです。
    Kare wa sushi ga suki desu.

 

  • This room is clean.
    この部屋はきれいです。
    Kono heya wa kirei desu.

 

  • She is healthy.
    彼女は元気です。
    Kanojo wa genki desu.

 

  • It is not quiet here.
    ここは静かじゃないです。
    Koko wa shizuka janai desu.

 

  • I dislike coffee.
    私はコーヒーが嫌いです。
    Watashi wa kōhī ga kirai desu.

 

  • Yesterday was lively.
    昨日はにぎやかでした。
    Kinō wa nigiyaka deshita.

 

  • I don’t have much free time.
    あまり暇じゃないです。
    Amari hima janai desu.

 

  • She was very fond of her dog.
    彼女は犬が大好きでした。
    Kanojo wa inu ga daisuki deshita.

 

  • I hate studying.
    私は勉強が大嫌いです。
    Watashi wa benkyō ga daikirai desu.

 

  • This city is not lively.
    この街はにぎやかじゃないです。
    Kono machi wa nigiyaka janai desu.

 

  • He was not fond of that movie.
    彼はその映画が好きじゃなかったです。
    Kare wa sono eiga ga suki janakatta desu.

 

  • The garden is beautiful.
    その庭はきれいです。
    Sono niwa wa kirei desu.

 

  • Today is a quiet day.
    今日は静かな日です。
    Kyō wa shizuka na hi desu.

 

  • They were not energetic.
    彼らは元気じゃなかったです。
    Karera wa genki janakatta desu.

 

  • I liked that restaurant.
    私はそのレストランが好きでした。
    Watashi wa sono resutoran ga sukideshita.
