What are i-Adjectives?
い-adjectives are a type of adjective in Japanese that end with the sound い (pronounced “ee”). They describe nouns and express qualities like:
- Colors (e.g., 赤い – “red”)
- Sizes (e.g., 大きい – “big”)
- Feelings (e.g., 嬉しい – “happy”)
- States (e.g., 寒い – “cold”)
How to Conjugate い-Adjectives
Conjugating い-adjectives involves modifying the ending based on tense and negation. Here’s how it works:
- Present Affirmative: Just use the adjective as is.
- 高い (takai) – “expensive”
- Present Negative: Drop the い and add くない (kunai).
- 高い → 高くない (takakunai) – “not expensive”
- Past Affirmative: Drop the い and add かった (katta).
- 高い → 高かった (takakatta) – “was expensive”
- Past Negative: Drop the い, add くない (kunai), then add かった (katta).
- 高くない → 高くなかった (takakunakatta) – “was not expensive”
